My ultimate tips for decorating your new home
Congratulations! You’ve just purchased a new home. Now to make it yours. Follow my three ultimate decorating tips for stress-free styling you’ll love!
Whether you’ve just tied the knot, bought your first home or are maybe starting fresh in a new location, this is such an exciting time. It can feel a little stressful or overwhelming at first when you’re starting from scratch (and you want to get everything perfect) but I promise it doesn’t need to be a mission if you follow my three ultimate tips for decorating your new home.
Example project – Rooftop Entertainers Paradise
To illustrate how to apply my tips I’ve used a project I completed last year in Rosebery. The brief was to design an indoor-outdoor oasis and entertaining paradise on the top floor of a penthouse apartment.
1. Always have a concept and embrace moodboards
The first step in making this process a breeze is simply knowing what you want! Before you start shopping or deciding on anything, take the time to do lots of research and really get to know your style. This is especially important if you’re moving in with someone for the first time and you want to decide on a style that you both like. Working this out in the concept stage will save a lot of arguments in the furniture store 😉
As you’re researching and looking for inspiration online or from magazines, start to put together a concept. It doesn’t need to be professional, just a format that works for you. Pinterest is great if you want to have it all in a digital format, otherwise you can use physical cutouts if you prefer something tactile.
Beyond any inspiration photos you find, just think about your personal style, the colours you really love (or not) and how you want your home to feel. Putting all of this together into one visual concept will help you narrow down to your ultimate style and make all those upcoming choices much easier.
2. Plan around your lifestyle
This is such an important but underrated tip. While looking at inspiration from other homes, remember to think carefully about the type of lifestyle you lead (or the one you are working towards!). It’s one thing for your home to look beautiful, but it needs to be functional as well, otherwise you’ll never be able to truly enjoy it! I promise your home can be stunning and functional at the same time.
Some of the biggest considerations are:
- Do I need spaces for entertaining?
- Will I be raising a family here?
- Will I have pets inside?
- What rooms will I spend the most time in?
- Do I need a workspace?
All of these factors will impact on the items you choose to fill your home, and none more so than your furniture. You really need to think about every space and how you are going to be using it.
If you are a visual person like me, I find it so helpful to take masking tape and mark out where a planned piece of furniture might go, staying true to its real dimensions. I find this is so much more helpful than a floor plan and you can easily do it yourself. After the room is marked out, act out some of your everyday activities like pulling out a chair or walking around the room. Does it feel awkward or cramped? Keep playing around with your masking tape until you find the best layout for each room.
3. Choose your hero pieces
My final tip is also the most fun! Once you’ve completed the tips above, it’s time to find those special touches that really take your space from a house to a home and make it uniquely yours.
Personally, I like to choose one hero piece for each room. This will always be a special, striking piece that stirs my emotions. Once I have this picked out, it will help me design the rest of the room around it. Yours could be an artwork, a rug, an interesting furniture piece, an object, or just anything that is important to you.
Having one hero piece for each room can also help you maintain that really special feeling throughout your home without blowing your budget. Your hero pieces are something timeless to invest in, that you’ll want to keep around year after year, but once you have them in place, everything else in the room is just there to complement this. This means you can go for more affordable, simple accessories and soft finishings to switch out when you’re in need of a change, and refresh any room without needing to break the bank.
Congratulations again on starting your new home and I hope these tips help you bring that space to life and make it work for you. If you’re in need of a little extra help making it all happen, feel free to reach out to me, I’d love to hear from you! Good luck.
